GUNNER LED THE Dark Knights down the quiet residential street, the rumble and roar of the motorcycles announcing their presence. Porch lights came on and front doors opened, curious faces peering out. Zeke and Zander took up the rear, telling the neighbors to go inside and lock their doors, while the rest of them continued on to Christopher Kile’s house. Gunner surveyed their surroundings as they approached the rundown rambler. There were two trucks and a motorcycle in the driveway and an old SUV parked at the curb. The curtains were drawn, but the lights were on, and he saw shadows of movement through the curtains. As Gunner parked, he spotted two police cars a few houses down and the rescue van at the far end of the street.

They climbed off their bikes, and Gunner motioned for Baz and Justice to go around the right side of the house and Maverick and Blaine to go around the left. Baz would verify the location and condition of the dog and report back to Gunner. If the dog was there and in need of help, they would cover the back and get the dog out if shit went south. Gunner kept his father, Tank, and Preacher on the front lines with him for pure intimidation. The three of them followed him halfway up the walk and stopped. Cuffs waited with them, although he wouldn’t make a move unless the police were needed. The rest of the brotherhood stood shoulder to shoulder a few feet behind them.

Gunner’s phone vibrated with a text from Baz. He opened it, and a picture popped up of a skinny, cowering dog chained to a tree. Gunner’s gut twisted, rage piercing him as another text from Baz rolled in. There’s a guy smoking on the patio and two more inside the patio doors.

Gunner thumbed out, Sending more your way. He shoved his phone in his pocket, pointed to four of the guys and motioned for them to head around back. Gunner met his father’s gaze, his silent Careful, son heard loud and clear. He caught the same message from Preacher.

Tank growled, “Let’s shut this fucker down.”

With his cavalry at the ready, Gunner headed up to the porch alone and banged on the door. Heavy footsteps approached, and a bald man peered out the sidelight window. Gunner stared back at him. Come on, fucker. Open the door.

The door opened just enough for Gunner to get a good look at the thick-bodied, bald man staring back at him.

“What do you want?” the guy asked.

“Are you Christopher Kile?” He always let them know he had their number.

The guy’s eyes narrowed. “Who wants to know?”

“I’m Gunner Wicked from Wicked Animal Rescue. My buddies and I were driving by and noticed you had a dog tied up out back.” The guy peered over Gunner’s shoulder. “I’d be happy to take it off your hands and give it a good home.”

“Fuck off.” He went to close the door, and Gunner stuck his booted foot inside, stopping him.
